WE BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE NEEDS AND DESERVES BASIC HEALTHCARE, AND HAS THE RIGHT TO BE TREATED WITH RESPECT WHILE GETTING IT.
The Wheels of Wellness (WOW) Outreach Mobile program uses mobile GP and Nurse clinics to engage, support and deliver health care to our forgotten members of society – people disadvantaged by domestic abuse, homelessness, poverty, and mental health problems (just to name a few). We help our clients achieve better health outcomes as they attempt to get their lives back on track. We are a registered charity and Non for Profit organisation that provides medical and social care with the aim of reducing homelessness here in Cairns. This is a group of Cairns locals: medical professionals and volunteers, who deliver free, focused medical and social support to anyone who needs it.
Our mobile clinics are free and deliver quality health care through weekly clinics that run from various locations including the street, shelters and homeless camps. The health and service needs of each individual are seen to by our experienced team, which include a nurse, social worker and GP.
We work collaboratively with community services, government organisations and other agencies including, but not limited to, Anglicare, Mission Australia and YETI to provide comprehensive and coordinated care in difficult circumstances. Through these partnerships we ensure a coordinated approach to patient care and follow up.
To cover our costs, we rely on donations and grants. Wheels of Wellness currently runs the medical clinic from the boot of a car, hindered greatly by the weather, lack of space and only allows us to see one client at a time, without any privacy. At night we have no light or protection from rain and mosquitoes, and no electricity or running water.
