Donations Needed For New Underwear
Next time you buy new underwear, why not buy an extra pair for disadvantaged community members?
Not-for-profit organisation Wheels of Wellness (WoW) are appealing to community members for donations of new underwear on behalf of their clients, who include homeless at-risk and vulnerable individuals.
“Our clients who sleep rough do not have regular access to washing machines, this means that clients request underwear on a regular basis,” says Chief Operating Officer and Program Manager Bec Coutis.
“Some of our clients will use the hub for preparing and getting ready for job interviews.
“Donations of underwear addresses shame associated with being homeless and goes towards homeless clients maintaining a sense of dignity, whilst assisting with personal hygiene.”
Underwear is an important item of clothing and yet is often overlooked when it comes to charitable donations.
Ms Coutis says the appeal for adult-sized underwear for both men and women will be ongoing to help disadvantaged community members.
WoW provides an outreach medical clinic that goes into the community with doctors and healthcare workers and also has the WoW Hub: Place of Peace, a centre that provides access to ongoing medical and social care and access to several other support services.
At the Hub, not only their current clients, anyone who walks in off the streets are welcome to some day respite with beds and bathroom and kitchen facilities available.
“Clients who sleep rough have access to showers when they visit the WOW hub. The requests for underwear comes because of wanting clean underwear to wear after shower,” she says.
“It allows a sense of dignity and promotes the importance of maintaining personal hygiene.
“A necessity that those who are more fortunate don’t even think about.”
So the next time you are going clothes shopping, going to the supermarket, or going out specifically for some fresh underwear, please be aware and buy some extra underwear.
If you want to donate new underwear for our disadvantaged community members doing it tough, please give us a call or pop in to the Hub. We are always looking for new partners, donations and ideas to help
improve our service and our community.
